Beyond ‘Megaflopolis’: Winning and losing at the box office is all about the zeitgeist

  1. Possible this is why the marketing for Transformers One was such a mess. A Transformers movie in 2024 is a hard sell after five movies that (in retrospect) are mostly stinkers, one good one, and then another that was only okay – especially when the other huge action franchises of the 2010s are also in hot water, so they either a) guessed or b) didn’t even try

  2. *Megalopolis* is *Babylon (2022)* all over again.

A big budget star-studded self indulgent passion project of the director that received mixed to bad reviews from critics and audiences and is a massive box office disaster.

Is it just me or is this opinion piece a very lazy take? Saying movies succeed at the box office based on some indefinable zeitgeist or mood, without any serious effort to at least try to say what that zeitgeist is, seems like it’s coming from a writer who is definitely *not* tapped in to the zeitgeist.

Is almost as if they should make movies that people want to see, and not what only the director wants to see.
