Lois was an ok mom. Sometimes she was good, sometimes she was bad, sometimes she was horrible, and sometimes she was amazing. She wasn’t a perfect mother, but she always did her best to deal with the circumstances life had dealt her. What she (and Hal) ultimately wanted was for their sons to grow into happy enough and functional adults, which is the goal of most parents. And in the end, the boys did indeed find their own ways.

They are both okay parents, I can relate to this show so much being a middle son with 4 brothers, and I have said this to my parents…why the fuck does dad not get a vasectomy…..

I would say their kids are the way they are because of the way Hal and Lois raised them but if you watched the flashback episodes you would know Reese was just born awful haha. So it’s probably both nature and nurture with that family.

This scene insinuates that at least Lois, as early as season 1, had motivations to her actions that wouldn’t necessarily make sense until this scene at the end of the series. She knew he had the potential to be a revolutionary president of the country, so she did stuff like treated him unfairly (like all the other employees) when he was an employee at the lucky aid just to really demonstrate and hit home how shitty life is for people who work these kinds of jobs and how much money they take home.

If Malcolm really were to be a conscientious and empathetic president as he was expected to be he really would have to have no shortcuts in life, and Lois really did make sure of this. Does that make her a great mom? Probably

    Terrible.

By the end of the show, she justifies her actions because “Francis didn’t need her so she had to be mean”. Just a few episodes before this she stole Malcoms grant money and bought an antique doll house…and let it burn to the ground. Then they are scrambling to get the rest of his tuition money for Harvard.

Hal wasn’t much better in retrospect. He didn’t work a Friday for 15 years, causing the family to struggle and Lois to work over time for years. He had severe ADHD that caused a lot of the burden of parenting to also fall on Lois. At one point he stole Malcoms credit card to pay for a ski trip because he was too embarrassed to admit he didn’t have a family trip planned.
