  1. “The lawsuit also pointed to language in the Amazon Prime Video terms that “any increase in subscription fees will not apply” until the plan is renewed. In response, the company says that the provision only applies to subscribers of Prime Video as a standalone service, which is separate from Prime.”

This bit seems like a load of bull.

  2. I heard England was trying to sue them as well. They basically called what they did extortion, which I believe is pretty fucking accurate.

  3. I may just be a small-town bird lawyer, but I have to guess that if they didn’t default every paying customer to the ad tier, this lawsuit wouldn’t happen.

They probably would have gotten a better result if they’d raised Prime by like $2 or $3 (whatever the upcharge is), thus the 100mil current subscribers all get hit with the charge, while you also introduce the ad-free tier… a few paying customers may bitch, they may switch to the lower tier, but a large part of them would probably have just eaten the fee and not made a peep.

  4. I pay for prime (mainly for delivery), I’ve pirated every one of their recent shows because of this.

  5. Crazy people still pay for these services. Been sailing the high seas for years with no guilt. I suppose I should thank all the people willing to pay for all my new content.
