Terrifier 3 potentially being the #1 film in the country is so insane to me. This has been a passion project of the director for well over a decade now.

He built a very small dedicated fan base by releasing an anthology film with the short films he made about Art the clown, followed by a feature film on a budget of maybe $50k. The film grew a bigger cult following, however the sequel only came into fruition because of crowd funding. T2 was never intended to be released in theaters but was released for a weekend as kind of a stunt to drum up publicity, and it became so popular the theater release continued to get extended.

Now T3, which has its largest budget at just $2 million, keeps having its projected box office weekend increasing. Really is inspiring to see this journey.

I know that this franchise isn’t very accessible outside of a niche genre, but a lot of the complaints of the film are very surface level to me. T2 and T3 are much more than just gore for the sake of gore.

Leone takes a lot of time and effort to make sure his characters don’t fall into traditional tropes, the characters all honestly are pretty well rounded for a horror film. That’s what makes the brutality and cruelty so effective, these characters aren’t just “copy and paste horror victim”, they all feel unique. T3 still struggles with some…not so great acting, but the main characters all actually do a great job. Sienna’s actress in particular delivers a truly GREAT performance, even if you take the genre out of it, she genuinely is great.

I know this is a long, over analyzed post, but as a fan of this series since the original anthology it’s so amazing to see just how far this franchise has expanded into mainstream pop culture.

And of course Hollywood will take the wrong lesson from this and assume that it flopped because they didn’t hide that it was a musical well enough.
