It was Animation Domination at the box office.

***Despicable Me 4*** easily won the top spot domestically, although ***Inside Out 2*** was still going strong in its fourth weekend. There two newcomers, although both were mixed bags; ***MaXXXine*** had the trilogy’s best debut despite being front-loaded, while ***Sound of Hope*** failed to impress, and ***Kinds of Kindness*** disappointed in its wide release.

The Top 10 earned a combined $151.9 million this weekend. That’s up 25% from last year, when ***Insidious: The Red Door*** led the box office. So far, July is off to a great start, and let’s hope the good will continues through the month.

Topping the box office, Universal’s ***Despicable Me 4*** debuted with $75 million in 4,428 theaters. Adding its numbers since Wednesday, the film has earned $122.6 million already. It’s apples-to-oranges in comparing it to ***Despicable Me 3*** and the ***Minions*** films, as they debuted on Friday. The closest comparison is ***Despicable Me***, which also debuted on Wednesday and made $143 million in its first five days.

Illumination’s films always cost cheap. This one is carrying $100 million, and it will safely be profitable. It’s a testament to the strength of the brand that it could still earn this much money after 14 years. Yeah, perhaps ***Inside Out 2*** stole some of its thunder by its massive numbers, but it’s hard to call this a disappointing figure. If you walk into this movie, you know what you’re getting. Even with weak reviews (53% on RT), that ain’t dissuading kids from watching it.

According to Universal, 53% of the audience was female and its biggest demo was 18-34 with 53%. They gave it a great “A” CinemaScore. An advantage is that the film has zero animated competition for two months, so it could leg out without any problem. Expect a fifth mainline installment announced soon.

As ***Despicable Me 4*** made its way, Pixar’s ***Inside Out 2*** had to drop to second place. But it still made $30.3 million, which marked a 47% drop. That’s not a bad drop, considering both films are aiming for the same audience. The film has earned a colossal $534.1 million, and it’s still on pace to hit over $600 million domestically.

In third place, ***A Quiet Place: Day One*** added $20 million this weekend. That’s a very rough 61% drop from last weekend, which is slightly bigger than ***Part II*** (59.5%). Through ten days, the film has earned $93.9 million, and it continues outpacing ***Part II*** through the same point.

In fourth place, we find the other newcomer, A24’s ***MaXXXine***. It debuted with $6.7 million in 2,450 theaters. That’s the best debut in the trilogy, which is quite impressive. Far below other horror films in the past few weeks, but considering how cheap these movies are, this is not a bad start at all.

On the other hand, the film proved to be quite front-loaded; it was heading for a debut close to $10 million based on its early Friday estimates, yet it finished far below that figure. Its Friday accounted for 47% of its opening weekend. That’s a bigger Friday share than ***X*** (41%) and ***Pearl*** (42%). But it’s tough to ask for better numbers for this trilogy, considering how niche they were.

According to A24, 52% of the audience was male and 40% was in the 18-24 demographic. Something interesting about the film is that critics’ reactions were less exciting than the previous films. The audience, on the other hand, gave it a “B” CinemaScore. That’s a solid grade for a horror film, and it’s even better than ***Pearl*** (B−). We’ll see how much it holds, but it’s a foregone conclusion it will be the biggest film in the franchise. It’s not even a high bar; it only needs $11.7 million. Even a paltry 1.75x multiplier gets it there. Ti West expressed interest in a fourth film, so this should be enough to greenlight it then.

***Bad Boys: Ride or Die*** was still in the top 5, earning $6.6 million this weekend and easing just 36%. The film’s domestic total stands at $177.4 million.

In sixth place, ***Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1*** earned $5.3 million this weekend. That’s a rough 51% drop; it’s not awful, but it’s not good either. Through ten days, the Western has made a meager $22 million domestically.

Angel Studios’ ***Sound of Hope: The Story of Possum Trot*** flopped with just $3 million in 2,200 theaters. It actually debuted on Thursday, where it earned $3.5 million. So as you can tell, it was quite front-loaded. Even with good reviews and strong word of mouth (“A+” on CinemaScore), it’s very likely it will fall out quickly.

\*\*\*Kalki 2898 AD\*\*\* collapsed 65%, adding $1.8 million this weekend. That takes its domestict total to $16.5 million.

It looks like ***The Bikeriders*** ran out of gas, cause it kept collapsing on its third weekend. This time, it fell by 61% and added $1.28 million this weekend. The film has earned 19.3 million, and it will certainly miss $25 million.

***The Fall Guy*** returned to the Top Ten, increasing by 129% for $870,945. Double feature perhaps. Anyway, the film currently stands at $92.1 million domestically.

Searchlight’s ***Kinds of Kindness*** hit wide release by hitting 920 theaters, but it only made $865,468. That translates to a very poor $941 per-theater average. Through its first three weekends, the film has made $3.8 million. With weak numbers and little awards buzz on its way, it looks like it won’t hit $10 million domestically.

#**OVERSEAS**

***Despicable Me 4*** won the domestic crown, yet the Minions were no match for ***Inside Out 2***’s fourth weekend in the rest of the world.

***Inside Out*** added $78 million this weekend, which was enough to top the box office overseas. And that took its worldwide total to $1.217 billion worldwide, making it the fifth biggest animated film in history. In Mexico, it became the biggest film in the country’s history with $90 million. Its best markets are Mexico ($90.2M), Brazil ($55.3M), UK ($50.3M), Korea ($48.3M) and Italy ($39.6M). In a few days, it will pass ***Incredibles II*** to become Pixar’s highest grossing film ever.

And now we come to ***Despicable Me 4***, which earned $73 million this weekend in foreign markets. Adding its numbers from previous weekends and its domestic debut, the film has earned $230 million worldwide. Its best debuts were in Mexico ($12.6M), Brazil ($5.9M), Spain ($5.7M), Indonesia ($2.6M), Netherlands ($2.6M), and Poland ($2.5M). There are a few markets left, but so far, a $800-$900 million run is likely for now.

***A Quiet Place: Day One*** added $21.1 million overseas, and its worldwide total stands at $177.7 million. It debuted in Chile ($450K), Argentina ($400K), South Africa ($280K) and Finland ($130K), all of which were the best numbers for the franchise. The best markets are China ($15.6M), Mexico ($8.9M), UK ($7.5M), Australia ($5.3M) and France ($4.2M).

***Bad Boys: Ride or Die*** added $8.2 million this weekend, taking its worldwide total to $360 million worldwide. Its best markets are Saudi Arabia ($20.5M), Mexico ($14.9M), UK ($14M), Germany ($10.3M) and France ($9.8M).

#**MOVIES THAT ENDED THEIR RUN THIS WEEK**

None.

#**THIS WEEKEND**

This will be a quiet weekend, so ***Despicable Me 4*** should easily hold the top spot.

We got the newest Apple film in theaters: Greg Berlanti’s ***Fly Me to the Moon***, which will be distributed by Sony. The film stars Scarlett Johansson and Channing Tatum, and follows the relationship between a marketing specialist and a NASA director during the 1960s Space Race. Both are highly popular actors and the film could be a good date movie for couples. Could it break out?

The other release is Neon’s ***Longlegs***, a horror film starring Maika Monroe and Nicolas Cage, and follows the unsolved case involving a Satanic serial killer known as Longlegs. With tough competition from ***A Quiet Place*** and ***MaXXXine***, it will be tough for the film to stand out.

#**ANNOUNCEMENT**

No write-up next week, you’ll have just the Weekend Actuals post. We’ll return to discuss ***Twisters***, the summer’s biggest wild card.
