Fitzjames was appointed the commander of the HMS *Erebus*, to be part of John Franklin’s ill-fated 1845 expedition to find the Northwest Passage. After Franklin’s death he and the commander of the HMS *Terror*, Francis Crozier, tried to rally the remaining men and bring them to safety. All the members of the expedition perished.

Researchers [from the universities of Waterloo and Lakehead](https://uwaterloo.ca/news/media/another-franklin-expedition-crew-member-has-been-identified) announced yesterday they had confirmed the identity of Fitzjames’ remains on King William Island, Nunavut. His skeleton suggests that he was subject to cannibalism after his death.
Amazing season of tv. Amazing performance from both actors and an amazing scene that is always the one I think off when someone mentions the show.
