I love his tactic here, because he reflects and affirms their perspectives and prejudices, regarding gays in the military. Highlighting their arguments and support for the specifici perspective. Then he expertly dismantles their entire argument using precadence and personal experience. He does it so matter of factedly and doubles down with affirmation of their argument that it “will disrupt the cohesion of the unit”, and then adds the long term effect, that the unit will adapt and evolve to this change, they “will get over it.”
It further highlights that a system like the military that is so settled within one “cohesion” is also easily prone to breakdown. That the success and performance of the system is built upon it’s ability to adapt to challenge and change. For those systems who are willing to adapt are the ones that will ultimately survive and thrive, while those that main strict stability will eventually falter.
