I was reminiscing about the old cartons with my partner so we decided to watch Astro Boy…

Damn is way too dark for kids these days…it made us pretty uncomfortable.

Summary of Episode 1:

In Episode 1 of Astro Boy, Dr. Tenma is consumed by his work and tells his son, Toby, that he has no time for him. After Toby runs off and is killed in a car accident, Tenma, overwhelmed by grief, decides to replace him with a robot. He creates Astro Boy, covering him in a synthetic skin to resemble Toby, and convinces Astro Boy that he is his son. When Astro Boy struggles to learn human behaviours and accidentally causes chaos at dinner, Tenma grows angry, declares that Astro Boy is not his son, and discards him. Heartbroken and seeking acceptance, Astro Boy is manipulated by an evil circus owner into signing away his own rights, becoming the property of the circus. After saving a ship from icebergs, he runs low on power, which the circus owner takes advantage of to kidnap and cage him. The episode concludes with Astro Boy crying out for his father, who is searching for him, but Astro Boy is too weak to be heard.

  1. Definitely not way too dark for kids nowadays.

Even the 2009 movie has pretty much the same story.

  2. That’s Pinnocio, but a robot.

    A well known children’s story.

American cinema in the 30-40s should not be held as a barometer of darkness and appropriateness.
