“Am I Racist” ($3 million budget) has made more at the box office than “Megalopolis” ($100 million budget).

  1. One has a target audience and the other does not. I think Coppola knew this would bomb, but I think Hollywood has been forgetting to ask “who are we trying to reach?” before making films in recent years.

Even if Am I Racist? is a documentary with a political message, there is an audience that makes it commercially viable if properly made, budgeted, and marketed.

I have no idea who Megalopolis is made for, but it is clear that anyone with money knew it was not a commercially viable product. It is art created solely for the enjoyment of the artist, and it doesn’t appear to have been done well either.

On the bright side, at least Megalopolis doesn’t have a second movie sitting on the shelf and with a story requiring a Parts 3 and 4.

  3. yeah because Am I racist was actually funny and a bit insightful compared to “What the fuck is this shit” vibe you get from megalopolis
