Director’s Cuts That Improve The Originals: From Blade Runner to Once Upon a Time in America

  1. The two that come to mind right off hand are Daredevil and Donnie Darko

Daredevil, while in no way a great film, was made considerably better by the directors cut. I went from hating it to actually somewhat enjoying it. (It’s made the list!)

Donnie Darko is hard to follow no matter what, but the directors cut made it less so.

And while I haven’t seen it yet, the Godfather Coda Death of Michael Corleone is supposed to be leaps and bounds better than Godfather 3

I know they called it extended editions instead of directors cut but lotrs all 3 films improved by extra scene

Like Eomers heartbreaking crys when he finds his sister Eowyn lying what looks dead on the battefield

Karl urban sells it and is an amazing actor

When I think of Director’s Cuts that improve on the original, I ALWAYS think of Ridley Scott’s Kingdom of Heaven. It’s stunning how much better his DC is from the theatrical version. His DC might actually one of the best, if not the best, historical epic about the crusades. It’s incredible.

  4. Agree so much on *2003 Daredevil* because the theatrical version that we got to see it really destroyed what was a rather good effort. From that generally failed and forgettable period of comic book movies, one must also remember *The Punisher*, which was really nice.

Also couldn’t agree more on *Leon*. It’s my favorite Luc Besson movie along with *The Big Blue.*

Villeneuve’s Dune and Dune Part 2 should definitely get extended editions. I’m sure there are plenty of deleted scenes that would make these movies an even better watch, especially for Part 2.

Hard to improve on Aliens but always watch the extended cut with the remote sentry guns scene

  7. The director’s cut of Dark City is essential. The theatrical release for some fucking dumb ass reason literally has a narrator explain the whole plot of the film in the first minute because the studio thought it was too confusing for the audience to watch the movie and work it out.

  8. Apocalypse Now. I get that the French plantation isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, and it’s placement at such a late stage in the story is jarring and can take you out of it, but I think it’s perfect for precisely that reason.

And speaking of Dune (Lynch), there is a directors cut that offer a lot more explanation. For all the criticism the movie gets, it was ambitious to jam that big a story into one movie. But before the Lord of the Rings, there were no preplanned sequels.

The Blade Runner Final Cut. For no other reason than to get rid of the Harrison Ford voice over. It’s so bad, it’s like even he didn’t believe in it.

Not Harrison Ford’s fault, btw. I believe it was forced in after the original screenings by the studio. The number of cuts this movies gotten is actually pretty amazing.

  11. The director’s cut of “Legend” is FAR superior than the producers’/studio hatchet job they released to theatre’s.

It’s kind of a meme now that Snyder is the directors cut guy but Zack Snyders Justice League is so much better than the 2017 version it’s kind of crazy, starting with the fact the actors actually wanted to be there

Both Christopher Nolan and Snyders wife warned him not to watch the Whedon version because it would break his heart

Alien 3: Assembly Cut is a criminally underrated one. It adds so much more substance to the film than the theatrical version.
