if you haven't seen this movie since you were a kid you should watch it again. it is 1000% more insane than you remember. just watched both movies and the first one was definitely darker than i remember but the second one is so batshit crazy i don't know how the studio approved that script.

there is a sweetness to the first film that is completely thrown out the window in the second. it's almost like Dante wanted to burn the whole franchise to the ground with G2 The New Batch. i won't even go into all the madness that goes down except to say at one point one gremlin gives another gremlin a Warner Brothers logo tattoo. WTF

also, after you watch it, here is a hilarious Key & Peele sketch about how ridiculous this movie is:

    >there is a sweetness to the first film that is completely thrown out the window in the second. it’s almost like Dante wanted to burn the whole franchise to the ground with G2 The New Batch.

The studio never understood Gremlins and wanted him to make lots of changes to the first movie that he fought against. Gremlins became a success despite the studio trying to meddle and they then said to Joe Dante that he needs to make a sequel. The Sequel is a satire of the studio culture not understanding the product and creating chaos.

  2. The second one is superb. It’s a joyride taking the mickey out out of overly picky Gremlins fans, crap multichannel networks, corporatism and it’s very funny. I have seen it multiple times and it’s one of the handful of VHS tapes i keep hold of.

  3. Dante initially refused the sequel but agreed once he was promised complete creative control over it. Hence the madness. Personally I like it more than the original.

  4. Gremlins 2 is one of my favorite sequels ever made because Joe Dante didn’t want to make it and Warner went to several other directors who turned it down. They came back to Dante who said “Okay but I wanna do whatever I want.” They said yes and Gremlins 2 is the result: A zany adventure in an automated office building that comments on consumerism, the popularity of the first and how ridiculous the concept is, and more of EVERYTHING from the first. It’s pure insanity from the mind of a director with no studio interference. I love this movie.

  5. The second one is a blast.

The first film tried to straddle the line between family, horror and comedy and never really lands in any segment (too dark for a family film, not scary enough for a horror, not funny enough for a comedy), so the whole tone of it is a bit off. But the second one just focussed 100% on FUN, and totally nailed it.

I don’t dislike the original, but the sequel is superb.

You tellin me you want a gremlin in the movie whose sole purpose is to look *stupid as FUCK?!* Done, it’s in the movie!

Yeah this film is off the rails, and for me personally that’s what makes it so great. Even when the movie is being serious there’s always a joke to be found. I think my favorite might be when Pheobe Cates is doing a call back to her grim christmas experience in the first movie. And Billy just straight up cuts her off refusing to let her finish.

To me that felt like Dante looking into the camera and saying, “No” To some studio execs notes about having a similar scene in the sequel because that’s what fans expect. The meta gags are next level.

Gremlins 2 is wild! The shift from the first film’s sweetness to pure chaos is insane. I can’t believe how off-the-wall it gets!

  9. Am I misremembering, or does the female costar talk about how her father died at Christmas time?

  10. I feel the same way about Weekend at Bernies 2. The shit is insane. It’s a slow start(the movie doesn’t get good until about 30 mins in), and you really have to watch the first one to get ready for it – but it will BLOW YOUR MIND.

  11. I’m still impressed that there are 2 versions of the film.
One is specifically for film, while the other was for vhs/syndication. I don’t want to spoil but the way a certain scene changed based on your method of viewing blew my mind.

  12. Gremlins 2 is delightful. Yes it is unlike the first one. But the amount of jokes this movie stuffs in and sight gags is delightful. Also all the puppets. You get so many cool looking Gremlins. So put some respect on this movies name.

Better than the first one. That’s what I always thought as a kid. I swear it was on TV every Christmas. “Start spreading the newsssss…”

  14. I saw Gremlins 2 when it hit VHS and I was almost 6. Pretty sure the girl gremlin was my lesbian awakening.

I was way too little to have seen these when I did and I kind of refuse to go back. Now it’s just a nightmare
